This is why I shouldn't be allowed to cook

So tonight, I was going to be healthy and steam some broccoli for dinner. I put the water and the broccoli in the pot, and then began preparing part 2 of my meal- chicken pasta. I was starting to feel like Rachel Rae- with all of the different aromas that I was smelling. I finished the chicken pasta, and it occurred to me- it smells like metal is burning. So, I moved all of the pots around on the stove and found no clue of anything burning until I remembered that I hadn't refilled the water in the steamer for at least 30 minutes. It all quickly escalated from there. There was smoke, and steam, and char... and my apartment was beginning to feel much like a dark, foggy night... I couldn't see anything. I quickly ran my pot out to my balcony so that my smoke alarm wouldn't go off. After the smoke cleared (pun intended) - I pulled out the broccoli from the pot and this is what I saw:

burned broccoli 1 burned broccoli 2

And this my friends is why I shouldn't be allowed to cook. My lungs feel like I'm a 45 year old woman who's been smoking since birth. Time to light some candles.

But, in other news... the new John Mayer CD is good and Wedding Crashers is a really funny movie. I love Vince Vaughn... but maybe cooking and watching a movie at the same time isn't the best idea.

Bye!

Derek Webb is such a stud....

"i love music. i have grown up with music as a close confidant. and i believe in the power of music to move people. there’s something remarkable about the way a melody can soften someone to a new idea.

as an artist (and often an agitator), this is something i am keenly aware of. my most recent record ‘mockingbird’ deals with many sensitive issues including poverty, war, and the basic ethics by which we live and deal with others. but i found that music has been an exceptional means by which to get this potentially difficult conversation going. and this is certainly an important moment for dialogue amongst people who disagree about how to best love and take care of people, to get into the nuances of the issues.

one of the things that excites me most about the future of our business is how easy it is becoming to deliver music to people who want to hear it. i heard a story once about keith green caring so much that people were able to hear and engage with his music that he gave it away for free, which was a very difficult and expensive thing to do at that time. it’s actually never been as simple as it is today to connect music with music fans. and i want people to have a chance to listen to mockingbird and engage in the conversation.

so this is why, on september 1st, we’re launching freederekwebb.com, a place where anyone can go online and not just hear but actually download, keep, and share ‘mockingbird’ completely for free. In addition, freederekwebb.com will give you an opportunity to invite your friends to download ‘mockingbird’ in order to get them in on the conversation as well.

we hope this bold campaign will provide a jumping off point for conversations about all of these issues, and communicate my commitment to playing my part in starting them. so please help us spread the word: on september 1st, ‘mockingbird’ will be set free!"

* Edit*... Get ready Oklahoma, I just looked at his stie, and he's coming to Jenks, Stillwater and Norman in a couple weeks!! Go and support good art.

Why are you so tired, Valerie?

Let me tell you why...

This thing lives on my roof.

He's not just a normal woodpecker, he's some kind of freaking pterodactyl breed.

Every morning, as soon as the sun comes up, he's there trying to peck his way into my apartment.

I was hearing a knocking sound, so I kept answering the door.

No one was there.

So, I went on my balcony to see if I could figure out what was going on, and there he was.

We made eye contact.

He flapped his wings and yelled.

I flapped my wings and yelled.... what?

And now he is trying to break into my apartment and I don't know what to do.

Does anyone know how to rid a woodpecker?

I think I might put some rice out on my balcony.

Maybe he'll explode.

But, then again...

Maybe we can be friends, and then I can ride him to work.
